![]() ![]() ![]() "In the next month or so, he came down and said did you ever think about going to barber school. and several other Peoria employers, but to no avail. An uncle from Peoria accompanied Bietsch to Caterpillar Inc. Corral, said he had no particular career goals after graduating from Springfield High other than to find work. "I'm going to see if I can fish every day until I get tired of it, or until I die."īietsch, a Springfield native who grew up just a few blocks from the O.K. "I wanted to get to 50 and wound up working 51," Bietsch said. But his final few days are much like the others. His employer and customers plan a formal sendoff Saturday. His plans were to call it a career after 50 years, but he tacked on one more. He said he also wants to spend more time with his only grandchild, Olive Horton, who lives in Bloomington-Normal. And he means it.īietsch, 72, said he has gradually scaled back in preparation for retirement, including by purchasing a cabin in Minnesota. "I'm going to go fishing," Bietsch explained to a longtime customer. Barbering was a default career, Bietsch said between appointments last week, after he was unable to find work following graduation from Springfield High School in 1964. I recommend the owner update the hours on the door if their barbers are going to be coming in outside of business hours of operation and Isaac needs to learn a lesson in service because he lost a loyal customer.Norman Bietsch started his barbering career not long after The Beatles started their mop-top craze.īietsch worked for others, but mostly for himself, during a 51-year career that ends with his retirement on Friday from his final stop of six years with the O.K. After years of going here to be treated like this, like we didn't even have any rapport and with an attitude, I won't be back. I've never missed an appointment in the past and I'm never late, and I told him I'm completely reasonable and understand why they have the policy, but this was a circumstance where they were not clear with their customers on the special hours arrangement. ![]() I asked for a refund and to reschedule the appointment, and he said he'll do this one time, but if I miss again in the future I'll pay for the missed appt and the next appt because he could have filled that appt spot with another person. How would I know this? There was no indication on the appointment scheduler. He said he's been doing this for the last 3 months. I mentioned the hours on the door, the unlit open sign, and he responded that he takes appointments prior to opening, but everyone else comes in at 9:50 am. He got an attitude with me, and said that he was there prior to 9 am. I told him that their scheduler must be wrong because I came at 9 am and they were closed. I called, expecting to receive the voicemail and leave a message to dispute this, but to my surprise Isaac answered. Then I received a text saying that I missed my appointment, and was going to be charged for the missed appointment. So, I assumed that their online scheduler app must have been incorrect because why would appointments be available prior to opening. When I pulled up to the shop, the lights were out, the open sign was off, and the hours posted on the door stated 10 am to 6 pm. I typically go in the afternoon, but due to my busy schedule, I needed the earliest appointment. Isaac has been my barber for at least the last 2 years. I have a chicken supply business down the street. I've been going to 1 Stop since it opened. ![]()
